Common Types Of LCD Screens

Jun 10, 2024

STN:
STN stands for "Super Teisted Nematic" and belongs to the passive matrix LCD category. Almost all black and white screen smartphones use this material for their LCD screens. A color STN LCD screen is a device that adds a color filter to a monochrome STN LCD screen, and divides each pixel in the monochrome panel matrix into three sub pixels, which panel red, green, and blue colors through the color filter, thereby achieving a color image. Due to technological limitations, STN LCD screens have a maximum of 65536 colors, and most of the STN products seen in the market are 4096 colors, so STN is also known as "false color".
GF:
GF stands for "Glass Fine Color". Perhaps many people are unfamiliar with GF LCD screens because there are very few digital products on the market that use GF LCD screens. In fact, GF belongs to a type of STN. The main feature of GF is that the brightness is improved while ensuring low power consumption, but the GF LCD screen has some color cast.
TFT:
TFT is an abbreviation for "Thin Film Transistor", also known as "True Color". It belongs to the active matrix liquid crystal screen, which is composed of thin film transistors. Each liquid crystal pixel is driven by a thin film transistor, and there are four independent thin film transistors behind each pixel to drive the pixel to emit color light, which can panel 24 bit color depth true color. In terms of resolution, TFT LCD screens can reach a maximum resolution of UXGA (1600 × 1200).
The arrangement of TFT has memory, so it will not immediately return to its original state after the current disappears, thus improving the shortcomings of STN LCD screen flicker and blur, effectively improving the panel effect of dynamic images on LCD screen, and more prominent in paneling static images. The advantages of TFT LCD screen are short response time and vivid colors, so it is widely used in laptops, DV, DC. The disadvantage of TFT LCD screens is that they consume a lot of electricity and have a relatively high cost.
TFD:
TFD stands for "Thin Film Diode". Due to the high power consumption and cost of TFT LCD screens, the product cost is greatly increased. Therefore, EPSON has developed TFD technology specifically for mobile phone screens. It also belongs to active matrix LCD screens, where each pixel on the LCD is equipped with a separate diode for individual control, so that each pixel does not affect each other. This can significantly improve resolution and panel dynamic images and brilliant colors without trailing.
In terms of performance, TFD LCD screens combine the advantages of TFT LCD screens and STN LCD screens. TFD LCD screens have higher brightness and brighter colors than STN LCD screens, while also being more energy-efficient than TFT LCD screens. However, they still lag behind TFT LCD screens in terms of color and brightness.
OLED:
OLED is the abbreviation for "Organic Light Emitting Panel", also known as organic light-emitting panel screen. It adopts organic light-emitting technology, which is the latest panel technology. OLED panel technology is different from traditional liquid crystal panel methods. It does not require backlight, but uses very thin organic material coatings and glass substrates. When current passes through, these organic materials will emit light, so its viewing angle is large, and the content on the screen can be seen clearly from all directions. It can be made very thin, and OLED panel screen can significantly save electricity, known as the "dream panel".
Strictly speaking, OLED is not a liquid crystal screen, it is the technology of LED. The core technology of LCD screens is in Japan; The core technology of OLED is in the United States and has already been mass-produced in South Korea on a large scale. It is used on Samsung's most selected mobile phone in South Korea, and the price is extremely high, even higher than the price of a smartphone.
However, OLED is not without its drawbacks. As it is still an immature technology, its lifespan is relatively short and the screen area is relatively small at present.
